Happy Sunday! This week in mobility... Mazda is playing catch-up on EVs with the announcement of a $10.6 billion investment, and more.
Need to Know
This week, Japanese automaker Mazda unveiled a $10.6 billion spending plan to electrify its vehicles, aiming to increase its share of the EV market by up to 40% of its total global sales by 2030.
Mazda said it plans to take a multi-solution approach to the challenge, starting with a new hybrid system to be deployed alongside battery EVs. To do this, the company is working with seven partners, such as electric-component maker Rohm, to develop and produce electric drive units jointly.
The investment follows similar announcements to that of its fellow Japanese players Toyota and Honda, which have both been slow to electrification. Mazda is adding to an ever-saturated EV race — it’ll be interesting to watch how they (and their domestic peers) plan to compete in the new frontier.
