Happy Sunday! This week in mobility... Uber and Motional hit the Las Vegas Strip with their public robotaxi service, and more.
Need to Know
This week, Uber and Motional, the driverless tech JV between Hyundai and Aptiv, launched a public robotaxi service in Las Vegas.
The launch follows the companies’ October announcement of a 10-year partnership to deploy AVs for Uber’s millions of riders. Previously, Uber and Motional launched autonomous deliveries for Uber Eats in Los Angeles.
Las Vegas riders can now call an IONIQ 5 robotaxi on Uber. As the companies are still scaling the offering, rides are not being charged for and will have a safety operator in the vehicle. Their goal is to offer a fully driverless commercial service to the public next year.
Uber's partnership and recent push back into AVs highlight the company’s recommitment to robotaxis following a brief hiatus after selling its autonomous vehicle research division to Aurora in 2020. In addition, Uber also signed a 10-year deal with autonomous startup Nuro to use the company's driverless delivery pods in California and Texas.
For Uber and Motional, the pilot is the necessary groundwork for much larger ambitions to bring autonomous technology to the masses at scale. As the pilot gets off the ground, it’ll be interesting to watch how the service plays out and what the reaction looks like from the public and industry.
